The
11th Siberian Ice Marathon was held on
6 January, 2002. It was started
at Central Square in downtown Omsk, Siberia, Russia. The event
program included half-marathon distance (21,1 km), fun-run (7
km), and Christmas relay for pupils.
415 runners took part in the 11th Siberian Ice Marathon, which
was a new record in its history. 208 participants (180 men and
28 women) ran the half-marathon distance, 195 participants took
part in 7 km fun-run. 32 runners from Belgium, Germany, the
UK, Switzerland, USA came to Omsk.

The severe Siberian weather gave participants a wonderful present:
the temperature was -14oС. However, a strong wind and ice on
the course prevented the course records from being broken (men
- 1:10.55, women -1:23.04).
An exciting struggle between Michael Kruse
(Germany), Anatoly Antonov (Omsk, Russia), and several runners
from Kemerovo (Russia) took place on the half-marathon distance.
Till the last meters the winner was unpredictable. The final
spurt of Eugeni Lykov (Russia) brought him
the first place with 1:11.32. Anatoly Antonov was 3rd (1:12.17).
German
runner was 7th.
Female overall winner became Anastasia Vershinina,
Omsk (1:34.33).
An honourable guest of the Siberian Ice Marathon was the unique
ultra-marathons participant and mountain climber from the UK,
Miles Hilton-Barber. The most astonishing fact
is that he has been blind for 20 years which did not prevent
him from revealing possibilities of man. His new achievement
became completing the half-marathon distance in Siberia.
